Housing Minister visits Radian development in Havant

The Minister for Housing, Gavin Barwell MP and the MP for Havant, Alan Mak paid a visit to one of the South’s leading housing associations, Radian on Friday 23 September 2016 as part of a tour of the local area.

Mr Barwell, the recently appointed Minister for Housing and Alan Mak, who was elected as the Conservative MP for Havant in May last year, were taken on a tour of Radian’s affordable housing development in Liberty Close, Havant.

The Minister and MP met the Chief Executive of Radian, Lindsay Todd and members of the housing association’s Development team to discuss housing in the UK.

Speaking at the National Housing Federation’s Annual Conference this week, the Minister for Housing praised housing associations for the work they have done, and continue to do, to support the development of new homes in the UK, but also expressed the need for them to do more. Radian recognises the need for more affordable homes in Havant, and the other areas it operates in and will continue to develop homes across all tenures to further support local communities and meet people’s needs.

The development in Havant consists of 24 homes and includes one and two-bedroom flats for affordable rent and three bedroom houses for Rent to Buy (let out at 80% of Market Rent). The residents then have the option to buy the property after six years of occupation, giving them time to save up the extra 20% of rental value for a deposit to buy the house or another property.

The names of the flats and the road, Charter House and Liberty Close, were suggested by Havant Borough Council to reflect the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta as the parchment for the Magna Carta was made in Havant.

Gavin Barwell said the visit to the Radian homes had been very interesting and was optimistic that organisations like Radian can continue to provide a valuable role in reaching the Government’s new housing targets: “This is a brilliant example of how housing associations like Radian can provide quality homes for people to live in – whether they are renting or saving up to buy their own home. I was especially pleased to meet a resident who has recently moved into her new home in Liberty Close - it’s clear that developments like these not only provide a home but a community as well.”

Lindsay Todd, Chief Executive said: “It was an honour to welcome the Minister for Housing, Gavin Barwell MP and Alan Mak MP to Radian’s Liberty Close development today. It is a core part of Radian’s purpose and mission to provide more quality homes to meet people’s needs. We invest millions of pounds each year in doing this, and have plans to increase production to 600 new homes a year. It was very useful to be able to share our strategy and purpose with the minister and local MP personally.”
