Society of St James – new house acquired
In the week before Christmas, Society of St James exchanged contracts for the purchase of a house in Southampton. The scheme was funded by Homes England and matched with borrowing from Society of St James.
Society of St James is on track to buy a property a month during this financial year, buying property in Southampton, Portsmouth and Aldershot. By the Summer 2019 we plan to have opened another 84 units of accommodation since we joined Wayfarer about 2 years ago. Many of these properties will be used as people move on from hostels and other specialist housing schemes, which in turn will create more space in the hostels to take people off the streets. Some of the units are used to house homelessness families nominated by local authorities.
Our long term strategy is to continue to provide emergency accommodation and specialist support for vulnerable and homeless people but to also increase our stock of independent housing, to provide a better range of options in the challenge of reducing rough sleeping in our community.
