Bracknell Forest Homes joins national campaign to celebrate supported housing

Bracknell Forest Homes is highlighting the great benefits of supported housing as part of Starts at Home campaign.

The Starts at Home campaign celebrates supported housing and tells the stories of people in communities across the country who have benefited from these vital services, being provided with an independent, safe and secure home.  This includes sheltered housing, refuges for people fleeing domestic violence, supported housing for those at risk of homelessness and also for vulnerable young people and adults with disabilities.

The funding system for supported housing is currently being reviewed by the government, after which a new funding mechanism will be set up. The National Housing Federation, with Bracknell Forest Homes and its other members, is  campaigning to persuade the government to ensure that funding is available for people who need extra support and a home that meets their needs, especially people who are vulnerable.

Linda Wells, Housing and Community Services Director at Bracknell Forest Homes, said: “Our supported housing schemes are very important to our local communities.  We provide good quality apartments and bungalows in a setting where people can live independently but have the reassurance of the support and security they need.

Our staff and homes have literally transformed lives and it is inspiring to see the impact supported housing has had.  Not only does supported housing benefit our customers and our community, but also benefits the public purse, by helping to promote, maintain and improve health and wellbeing of residents. We need to ensure there is adequate government funding to enable housing associations and other providers to continue to offer very important accommodation.”

June Boyle recently moved to Liscombe House and commented: “It’s marvellous here. It’s safe and secure, which is very important as you get a bit older. The schemes are well maintained, in good locations and have absolutely everything you need.

“I hadn’t considered my future but knew I might downsize to something more manageable. Bracknell Forest Homes’ retirement living schemes are perfect and I wish I had considered it sooner. There’s everything you need, the privacy of your own flat and the community and social activities to give you company if you want it.
“There was brilliant help to move with things like organising removals, redirecting post and setting up utilities, so it was very smooth. And there was a welcome bonus with the Transfer Incentive Scheme, which gave me some extra money to buy some nice new things and decorate my new flat exactly as I wanted it, so it’s lovely and cosy. I love it.”

Bracknell’s MP, Dr Phillip Lee has been a strong advocate of our extra care scheme at Clement House and we will be asking him to support the campaign too.

David Orr, Chief Executive at the National Housing Federation said: “Supported housing provides a safe and secure home that helps people to live independently and to achieve their aspirations. That's why we launched the Starts at Home campaign to celebrate the good work done by so many in the supported housing sector, and show the government why it’s such a crucial part of the housing fabric.”
